Fr. James L. Heft, S.M., is a Marianist priest, Alton Brooks Professor of Religion at USC, and president and founder of the Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC.
Prior to coming to USC, Fr. Heft served as provost and then chancellor of University of Dayton. He is the author or editor of twelve critically acclaimed books and more than 175 articles and book chapters. His work as editor of Passing on the Faith: Transforming Traditions for the Next Generation of Jews, Christians and Muslims (Fordham University Press, 2006); and Beyond Violence: Religious Sources of Social Transformation in Judaism, Christianity and Islam (Fordham University Press, 2004) are of particular note, as both have been widely acclaimed by religious and secular scholars. His most recently published book is one he co-edited with Jesuit historian John O’Malley, After Vatican II: Trajectories and Hermeneutics, and he is currently working on a volume of essays.
